High Chair vs Booster Seat... The BIG debate.

There is no 1 size fits all answer. It really depends on how you are looking to use your seat. How much space do you have? Do you want to be able to adjust the height? Do you want it to recline? How old/big is your baby? Do you want baby to sit at the table with you? Do you want it to be transportable? Do you want it to fold? Here's the goods on both the high chairs and the booster seats. Keep in mind that there are exceptions in each category, but this should give you a general idea.

High Chair

High Chairs - Boon, Peg Perego, Nuna, Bloom & More Boon Flair Pedestal Highchair

Pros

  • Height adjustable
  • Sturdier
  • May recline
  • Can be used from an earlier age
  • Can fold for storage

Cons

  • Takes up more space
  • Not easily transportable
  • Unless the seat grows with the child (Tripp Trapp, Height Right, Signet) you get shorter use out of it
Most popular high chairs: Boon Flair, OXO Tot Sprout, Keekaroo Height Right, Peg Perego Siesta

Booster Seat

Feeding Booster Seats OXO Tot Booster Seat

Pros

  • Less bulky and lighter (easier to move around and for transporting)
  • Can be used longer
  • Fits easier at a table when you remove the tray
  • Takes up less storage space

Cons

  • Doesn't recline
  • Seat is lower and not height adjustable
  • Can't be used until child sits on their own
Most popular booster seats: OXO TOT Booster, Keekaroo Cafe, Phil&Teds Lobster Personally, I use both. I start with the high chair and then change to the booster seat. This gives me the flexibility that I need for each stage. When my babies are infants I use the high chair. I get the sturdier seat with a recline so that I feel that my baby is safer. Then, as my babies get bigger I switch to the booster seat. It makes them feel big and takes up a lot less room. It's also very handy to have the booster when I go to my parents and in-laws, or when we go out to eat. But, and this is a big consideration, I have the storage space available and a very roomy kitchen and dining room. See comparison charts here What do you prefer, the high chair or a the booster seat.
